Aesthetically and tonally, bubblegum bass has been shifting towards taking heavier inspiration from the electronic music of the late 90s/early 2000s. Sydney-based producer Donatachi's latest release, aptly named donatachi.com, is drenched in Y2K tropes but with a modern sparkle that feels more fresh than derivative.
Juggling stadium rock-y vocal trance, hardcore drums, fast breaks, and electropop guitars, donatachi.com is more than the sum of its parts. The overtly-Y2K packaging of the album almost does a disservice to the project's futuristic glean; the squeaky-clean mixing and serotonin-filled melodies sound like a closer step to bubblegum bass' end goal than any other step backwards.
