PUNK GOES DRILL
by: Polo Perks
In a world that's completely overtook by drill, it's understandable to feel a little overwhelmed. Even amidst the phenomenon of different cultures providing their take on the genre, the production itself feels one-note. Polo Perks is the Lower East Side rapper at the forefront of the sample drill movement – an NYC take on drill that utilizes samples and colorful melodies in contrast to the Brooklyn drill's moody image. The Surf Gang affiliate released PUNK GOES DRILL earlier this year, mashing 2000s pop-rock samples and drill drums to create the freshest take on the genre to date.
PUNK GOES DRILL almost feels like the reincarnation of Dipset in their heyday appropriating classic rock hits: sped-up samples of hits by bands like Snow Patrol, The Killers, and Foo Fighters prop Polo Perk's signature promethazine-laced flows. The result is a tape packed with bright party jams and a hint of nostalgia for anyone who grew up hearing the samples. And complete with transitions and an abundance of tags from Shoku Radio and Surf Gang, the project feels like a mixtape in the truest sense.
